In 1612 Yasui Douton led construction of a canal in Osaka. A special neighborhood quickly emerged, famous for theater and then restaurants. My painting of Dotonobori emerges from the act of walking. My body movement stretches the borders of reflected and emanating light forms, dancing as numerous simultaneous brushes working in concert. Open aperture softly expands background gradations. Yet the recessional perspective retains its power. After many months I have an oil painting that felt like the Dotonbori I saw.
