Hi, I’m Jamie Gray. While my wall sculpture, titled ‘Wishing Gate,’ visually references stone, it is made from wood and wax. Specifically, I created the organic shapes from reclaimed wood and treated the surface in encaustic wax, (which is an ancient and archival mixture of pigments, beeswax, and natural tree resin). I enjoy transforming these materials, derived from nature into a tribute to nature. Of note, my father, Robert Gray, also has a piece selected for Art of the State 2025. His vessel, titled ‘Hollow Form #5,’ is made from naturally wind-fallen Aspen, which he transformed into a celebration of the tree’s natural beauty. While our artistic approaches may differ, we both work with wood and share a passion for creating organic forms that express our affection for our Colorado landscape.
