Hi, I’m Lauri Dunn-Peterson, and I’m the artist who created this piece, “ Deroplatys lobata.”
In my artistic practice, I’m inspired by geometric patterns. These patterns act as a universal language, bridging history, science, and the beauty of the natural world.
My process begins with a photograph of an insect—in this case, a praying mantis. The image is printed on cotton rag paper using archival ink, then meticulously scored, cut, and folded into geometric forms. These forms are then arranged to create a larger geometric pattern. The larger compositions are inspired by geometric patterns in nature, mathematical principles and geometric motifs used throughout history.
These patterns reflect a desire to bring order and structure to our lives, mirroring the balance and harmony found in nature and the mathematical principles that shape our world.
