All That Is Gone, and All That’s To Come

This is Melissa Shawnee.

All of my artwork represents the connection and movement of life, and all that’s around us.  Everything is in a constant state of motion and transformation, from the cells in our body to our great Earth hurtling through space, all of which is connected.

My process is tied to this notion.  Using powerful brushstrokes with great energy, I create a foundation from which I pull and move the paint till forms appear.  These forms are symbolic of organic life; the strange and the lovely.

Lines flow through my work like grooves in a record, containing memories and ideas; the intangible.

Like a Rorschach test, my work’s meaning can be interpreted differently by each viewer.

In this particular piece, I see a face in profile surrounded by the past and present, looking toward the future …all that is gone, and all that’s to come.
