Hi. I’m Jerry Severns. Some years back I bought a torch to fix an old bicycle racing frame. The repair was not successful. I never rode the bike again. But, I’ve been playing with metal ever since.
I explore movement and interaction with sculpture. Everything in our known existence has been created by the movement of something, and its interaction with something else. In that movement and interaction are where stories are found.
Many of the elements in my sculptures can be imagined as previously unknown beings. In meeting these beings, I ask the viewer to consider the possibility of beauty and value in those who may not be just like us.
"Cheek to Cheek" began as a study of right triangles; how they might balance and move and move together. The result was these dancing triangular beings. For the first several months of their existence they were separate pieces, dancing together in many poses. They have now made a commitment to each other and become joined, cheek to cheek.
This piece is mild steel and finished with darkening patina, black metal oil and polymer-based patina stains. It is an inside piece that will be ideal in a performing arts related setting.
