My name is Mindy Bray, and I am a Denver based artist working in 2D media, including drawing, painting, and large scale mural installation. This piece is titled Still No. 2 and is an ink drawing on paper. My work typically begins with photography, and this image is part of a larger series based on photographs of a single frame of a river.
My camera did not move, but as I shot images, the surface of the water continually changed. The piece is about both the change and the constancy of water, an element that has historically been used to describe a meditative state, and is also now at the center of the climate crisis. In terms of process, I begin with a large ink wash and then draw in the shapes with pencil and use brushes and indigo shellac ink to fill in the negative space.
The brush strokes are visible in the larger areas, referring to my hand and marking the time spent making the piece.
