Hello, my name is Madeline Sturm. I'm a printmaker and artist from Durango, Colorado, but currently reside in Arvada, Colorado. Ground Quilt II was a piece I made during my MFA at the University of Alberta in northern Canada. The piece sort of began when I spent a lot of time in this nearby park near my studio, and I took a lot of photos of this open space.
I used the photos as like a source of inspiration for my drawing, and then I drew onto a litho stone. I then printed the litho stone on kozo paper, and then with each image, I did a different monotype layer. Once those dried, I cut them out into squares, glued them on to a bigger piece of kozo, and then I went in and I did some hand tinting that you can kind of see with the white.
Later on, I ended up doing waxing with beeswax on the paper, and then sewed it, kind of like how you would with quilting. The piece is sort of representative of valleys and mountains in both these areas that I had lived and actually the squares are sort of these plots of lands that have been converted into vast, diverse landscapes.
This piece represents both macro and micro aspects of these landscapes.
