This is Travis Vermilye. My piece, titled “Collection 007”, is part of series inspired by the tangles of plant life and objects washed ashore along the coast of the Pacific Northwest and Donegal, Ireland, that I witnessed first-hand during recent visits to these locations. Seeing these small collections of natural and man-made objects caused me to reflect on the way we, humans that is, tend to collect pieces of nature for study, beauty, and curiosity. Seeing bits of plastics washed ashore, even in the most remote of areas, also caused me to consider the inadvertent harm we are causing to nature and to ourselves. Overall, “Collections” is my way of exploring the beauty found in unexpected places and the lasting imprint we leave on the world around us.
