Hello! My name is Margaret Kasahara, and I have 2 pieces in the exhibition: “Notation 23-24”, and “Notation 24-24”.
My work is an expression of identity. I’m responding to daily life and often incorporate
commonly found objects to reflect the everyday nature of the work.
I call my intimate mixed-media works on paper, Notations. I am taking note of thoughts and feelings, specific events, and moments in time. They are visual poems, and the images are distilled to their essence.
The two pieces included in this exhibition are part of a ongoing series of Notations that utilize security envelopes. After my parents’ passing in 2022, I began to receive various documents mailed in security envelopes. One day, I realized how very interesting the interiors of the various envelopes are! I find the envelopes fascinating and full of expressive potential. The interiors of the envelopes present a variety of colors, patterns, and window sizes, and I have been struck by the layers of meaning and metaphorical possibilities found within the cellophane and paper envelopes. I’m reflecting on “security” as the safety of home and family, and as the protection of ones privacy and critical digital identities consisting of numbers and verifiable accounts.
Thank you so much for your interest and thank you for coming to the show!
