Hi. My name is Mary Crabtree, and I am a botanical artist based in Johnstown, Colorado. My passion for botanical art stems from my love of plants, a commitment to scientific accuracy, and an appreciation for realistic art. The goal of botanical illustration is to depict plants—or parts of plants—in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and scientifically correct. I strive to capture the intricate beauty of each subject, blending color, composition, and form to create a true representation of nature.
This painting features the hybrid orchid Brassolaeliocattleya Copper Queen. Painted in watercolor on hot-pressed paper, this piece reflects both a contemporary composition and the tradition of botanical illustration. It includes the whole plant—flower, bud, leaves, and roots—emphasizing the plant's complexity and beauty.
My process begins with studying and sketching the live plant from multiple angles to understand its structure and form. I often take numerous photographs to capture fine details, but I paint from the live subject to maintain accuracy and authenticity. Color studies and test paintings help me match the plant's exact hues and form before I commit to the final painting. Each step in my process is a careful attempt to highlight the inherent beauty of the plant while honoring its botanical integrity.
I am delighted to share Copper Queen with you in this Art of The State 2025 exhibition!
