Pink Gradient Moon Jar

Hi this is Sami Foster. I am a ceramic artist based in Denver. I started my ceramic journey after taking a wheel class in 2023. Shortly thereafter, I was selected for a year long apprenticeship where I developed my body of work.

I created this moon jar inspired by my Korean heritage and love for glaze chemistry.

Previously, I was a research scientist in genetics and I have taken my joy of understanding the world on a molecular level into ceramics. I utilize my understanding of chemistry to make my artistic vision come to life. 

I developed a glazing process to make a pink gradient without spraying. The moon jar is glazed with a tin oxide glaze and is placed inside a bowl painted with various layers of chrome oxide. At the top temperature in the kiln, the chrome goes in the air and lands on the tin glazed piece and makes a pink gradient.
