Nancy Lovendahl - "Culture 1.0"

Hi this is Nancy Lovendahl, a sculptor and public artist from Old Snowmass on the western slope of Colorado.  This artwork is called CULTURE 1.0, made of limestone, UVB epoxy resin, blue plexiglas, acrylic medium and bricks.  This is an experiment in self-awareness from an exhibition and body of work called "Small Glimpses, Many Times."

What we see with our eyes is only transformed and understood as truth by our minds.  This artwork is an invitation to view this phenomenon as a metaphor for the conflict between perception and reality that divides us from each other.  We each see the world through a lens of biased personal perception that obscures the experiences, people, and interactions before us. Our biases lead us to isolate each other into small boxes, motivated by a collective fear. Through this body of work, I hope that a beautiful and non-threatening subject — the mountain — may provide an entry through which we can investigate our patterned responses and assumptions.  What we see here physically is a stone mountain carved naturalistically with a hole roughly cut out at the bottom.  If we look through this hole we can see the blue plexiglas through to the other side, where there are bricks stacked into a more static mountain shape.

What I’m pointing to in this sculpture is that there are always 2 sides to everything.  We each think we are so different but we all care about many of the same things, like love and being alive.  If we practice listening to each other, we may discover those same things we ultimately care about even though we may have very different beliefs.  Thank you for seeking more information about my sculpture.
