Melon Drop is a piece taken from an on going series of drip paintings I’ve been exploring for the past 12 years along side my more gestural abstract work.
In this process-driven approach of simply dripping paint, I need only to ensure the material has the right viscosity and opacity to travel from top to bottom in a consistent manner. Color choice would be the most important aspect.
I don’t have a preconceived notion of the finished piece, rather, the choice of color is an intuitive response to the previous lines on the canvas. As the work evolves it will become evident which direction the piece will go. It can range from a mono-chromatic sequencing to a harmonious stripe color field. Or an eye-buzz discord, op art kind of thing.
I like the idea that what appears to be a tightly controlled application, is actuality an uninterrupted, natural gravitational drip of paint.
