Five years ago I moved to Westminster and started to swim at the Swim and Fitness facility at 76th and Irving Street. When I first drove south on Lowell Street and crossed 88th Avenue, my breath was taken away by the vista of the undulating farmland and red sandstone castle directly behind.
It was as if I was being transported to another country hundreds of years ago. I knew at that moment I would have to honor this landscape by drawing it. This opportunity finally arrived last summer. For days I sat on the corner in my camp chair, observing, enjoying and drawing.
I understood intuitively that this vista was not forever; nothing is in our world. Indeed, there are pressures from the world, seeking for places to live, affecting every town and city in the world; even our little Westminster, Colorado. What will unfold here at 88th and Lowell is yet to be seen.
I have a measure of happiness for having spent some intimate time with this very unique and beautiful embellishment of our land.
