Hello, this is artist Sharon Strasburg. For this artwork that you are looking at, my intention was to address contemporary interpretations of beauty and landscape. I'm interested in exploring ways we access and communicate our reverence and awe for the natural world in this digital era. This peterly surface of my richly colored monotypes reflect the wonderous forms of nature. There is a graphic flattening and a machine position of a laser cut shapes that counterpoint those fluid luminous surfaces. A memory of natural grandeur is evoked while constricted by the familiar language of digitized reproduction. To create this work I used a printmaking process called monotype. For this piece I made ten monotypes and created a drawing on my computer referencing my many photographs of mountain ranges in Colorado. I made the computer drawing and used it to laser cut those ten monotypes. I then took those cut shapes, much like puzzle parts, and reassembled them to create the piece that you're looking at right now. So grandeur is evoked and constricted by digitized construction. Hope you enjoy it!
