My name is Betsy Margolius, and I created the painting “Riverfront II”, a three part oil painting on wood panel, as part of a series that depicts the landscape along the path at the Riverfront by downtown Littleton. This past winter my husband and I took long morning walks there many cold and snowy Sunday mornings. I was inspired by all the lines that winter exposes in the structure of trees and branches. I realized winter is about line in nature – shapes come back in the Spring and Summer. I was particularly drawn to the interesting negative spaces between the twisting and turning branches of trees and bushes we saw along the path. Although I’ve mostly worked with strong color, during the height of the Pandemic I was drawn to paint in silvers, greys, and muted shades of blues and greens. My work reflected my inner state of feeling like I was in a sort of hibernation, suspended in ice and waiting for the thaw.
