Terry Decker - "GARDEN OF THE GODS"

Hi, this is Terry Decker. I am a Colorado artist. I have a full time studio practice located in Denver, Colorado. I want to thank you for stopping by my print.

Because of Covid19, I made the choice to transition from landscape photography to printmaking. This was no easy task. There has been and continues to be ongoing research into printmaking, researching the old traditions and processes, new processes, new processes and new techniques. I have focused on the pigment transfer printing process. This style of transfer uses a digital image printed onto a substrate and then that image is transferred onto the print paper. Some styles of transfer use a chemical process to release the image from the substrate onto the paper. My method does not use any chemicals to release the ink onto the paper. After trying to print on many different types of substrate, including wax paper, parchment paper, freezer paper and clear transparency, I discovered the backing sheet for 8-1/2" x 11" shipping labels. These substrates go through the printer well without smearing, the ink dries Slow, easily squeegees off onto the print paper and the substrate can be reused two or three times. The size of the image printed onto the substrate is limited, because space must be allowed for the holding, transporting and transferring the substrate image onto the paper. That is why this print "Garden of the Gods" required six transfers to achieve the final image. The paper I use to print on is called Masa. Masa is machine made in Japan of sulphite pulp. This strong, white, acid free, smooth with even formation absorbs the ink well and does have reasonable color fidelity. The images that I use for these prints are from my photographs and my studio mate's scanned thumbnail sketches. These images are all altered and refined in digital image programs. This print, "Garden of the Gods" is from a series called "Gems of the West: Glimpses of Reality."

Thank you and enjoy the show.
