In December of 2021, I spent three days traversing untracked white dunes in disbelief that I was nearly alone. The landscape seemed to go on forever. The dunes are not actually sand, but gypsum, and cover almost 300 square miles in Southern New Mexico. With the white gypsum crunching under my foot steps, I repeatedly had to remind myself that I wasn’t walking on snow.
