This image is one of several photos I created over a period of nine months during my love affair with the Manhattan Beach pier. I photographed the pier literally hundreds of times from different angles, with different lenses, and at different times of day.
One of my favorite images, is this one, taken well before dawn during the Blue Hour. It’s the period of time when the sun is far enough below the horizon that the blue wavelengths are the primary source of light. For this image, I arrived on the beach in total darkness early one December morning. In a long exposure shot like this one, stationary objects like the pier appear normal, but anything moving, like the ocean and the breaking waves, when captured over time, creates pure magic.
