This image was captured on a cool, but sunny October morning just north of the Manhattan Beach Pier. With offshore winds and a peaky swell combination, there were numerous near perfect waves rolling in. I took dozens of shots of surfers that morning hoping for an epic surfer-in-the-barrel image, but it didn’t happen. Instead, I got a very different but equally compelling image of a pitching wave confronting a surfer just as he raises up on his board before duck diving.
