The Manhattan Beach Pier is an historic landmark and over 100 years old. In its long history, the pier has been battered by sun, wind, rain, salty air, and of course, huge waves. By the time I arrived on this October afternoon, the pier and beach were already closed. A huge thunderstorm sat just offshore, threatening to pounce. The sun was still attempting to break through the clouds, but it was obviously a losing battle as the persistent storm began to advance.
It wasn’t until I began to look for the composition of my shot that I realized that because of the closures, the pier and beach were completely devoid of people. It was eerie - you’d almost never see an empty pier and beach on any other afternoon. Then suddenly the last ray of sunlight managed to pierce through the clouds. I raced to the south side of the pier just in time to capture this image before the storm closed in.
