Hagerman Mansion

610 N. Cascade Ave

Businessman James John Hagerman came to Colorado Springs in 1885 after being diagnosed with tuberculosis. He built this three-story Victorian mansion as a place to recuperate. Known for his remarkable sense of humor, Hagerman once quipped, "I came to Colorado Springs to die, and I just couldn't get it done." Instead, he regained his health and expanded his business empire to include western railroads and mines. As the founder of the Colorado Midland Railway, Hagerman served as a Colorado College trustee from 1889 to 1908. In 1889, he donated the first CC Dormitory in an effort to attract students from outside city boundaries.
