Philanthropy Collective

315 E. Pikes Peak Ave

Home of the Sachs Foundation. In 1903, businessman Henry Sachs came to Colorado Springs seeking a cure for his tuberculosis. Henry Sachs first found business success as a stockbroker in Boston, and subsequently became one of the first investors in the Gillette Safety Razor Company. Of Jewish descent and alert to discrimination, Sachs paid the Colorado College tuition of the brilliant Effie Stroud, who graduated cum laude in 1931. At the suggestion of Effie’s parents, the Rev. K.D. and his wife Lulu Stroud, Henry Sachs established the “Sachs Foundation for Negro Welfare.” Today the Sachs Foundation has a mission to further racial equity for Black Coloradoans through education and community programming.
