On July 4, 1877, Colorado College and the community of Colorado Springs gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the college's future campus on a vast, undeveloped prairie. President Edward P. Tenney (1876-1884) commissioned the nationally renowned architectural firm of Robert S. Peabody and John G. Stearns, Jr., both Harvard graduates, to design the building. The initial phase of the construction, known simply as "The College," was completed by December 1879 and occupied for the winter term in January 1880.
