McAllister House

423 N. Cascade Ave

Major Henry McAllister and his wife, Elizabeth Couper McAllister, and their family resided in this home, constructed in 1873. Before settling in Colorado Springs, Major McAllister served with General William Jackson Palmer in the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. Afterward, he held the position of an officer in the Colorado Springs Company and was a founding member of the Colorado College board of trustees when the institution was established in 1874. As a Quaker, McAllister championed the inherent equality of all individuals and was a pioneer in the women's suffrage movement in Colorado. He and General Palmer generously donated land along Cascade Avenue to serve as the campus for Colorado College. (National Register)
