Artist Bio:
Joanna Webster is a scientific writer, artist, and illustrator who is passionate about encouraging interest in and understanding of the world in which we live. She works from life, creating botanical illustrations and artwork using quill and ink, watercolor, carbon dust, graphite, and color pencil.
Notes on Process:
Trained as a botanical illustrator through the Denver Botanic Gardens program, Joanna Webster’s beautiful and delicate images of a series of six flower buds serves a dual purpose. As she was recovering from a serious illness, and couldn’t be around anyone for months, she spent the time meticulously recording each petal and leaf via a technique called dry-painting with hand-ground carbon dust. Once the images were complete, they were transposed onto photo-polymer etching plates, to be printed in both monochromatic black and white (as they were drawn) and then in multi-color variations with Chine Collé.
