Notes on Process:
The inspiration for these hand-drawn and sanded aquatint etchings comes from a series of cast glass sculptures that David Row was embarking upon in 2012, building on his long career as a painter. We spent a day planning the stages of each plate, and then all six copper plates were etched and proofed over the course of another 2 days. One plate for each image was simply inked in a transparent grey and created the shadows. Another plate was cut and beveled to fit in the area of the object and make it appear more isolated. Sanding the aquatint surface lightens the amount of ink that will be deposited on the paper, and gives these images the effect of light shimmering through the objects. (See video)
