Notes on Process:
In this large-scale woodblock monoprint by Catherine Shuman Miller, the artist deliberately juxtaposes 2 very different mark-making techniques. Combining the graphic precision of the laser-cut woodblock, which was printed twice in two colors, with the delicacy of the pale brushy washes of watercolor heightens the tension between the layers. This print is one of the largest to be printed at OG, with the block situated almost completely covering the press-bed. The image was generated from a small sketch, and the composition reveals the push and pull of the space on the paper.
