Artist Bio:
Born and raised in Nagano, Japan and originally trained as a nurse, Taiko Chandler lives and works in Denver, CO. She works primarily in printmaking and, more recently, site-specific installation art.
Notes on Process:
Taiko Chandler’s artistic journey began after a first career as a nurse in Japan. Her yearnings to express herself after moving to a new, foreign country drove her to start making works on paper, which led her to printmaking. She has worked collaboratively with Sue Oehme on 7 different print projects, each one building off ideas that were discovered earlier. In this piece, from her most recent project in 2023, she deliberately set-out to keep a more limited palette, and a sparseness of shapes. Each working day sees us inking plates and stencils in the mornings, then a long session composing the images directly on the press bed, using offset, ghost and shadow stencils as well as freshly inked ones.
