Frank Stella is a painter, sculptor, and printmaker who lives and works in New York City.
Notes on Process:
Even though this piece was not created at Oehme Graphics, in a way, it led to the studio’s existence. When Sue Oehme (then Sue Hover) was hired to print at Tyler Graphics in 1991, one of the country’s most prestigious fine print studios, an hour north of New York City, she was introduced to the world she had been waiting for. Over the course of the next six years, she would become the master color mixer and printer for Frank Stella, as well as the master printer for numerous art luminaries such as Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, John Newman, and Masami Teraoka.
This print by Frank Stella was the first true piece that Sue was in charge of, mostly, from start to finish. From Frank Stella’s smoke ring series, he was experimenting with many different ways to get an image on a plate, and various ways of applying the ink to the surface of each plate. It’s a virtual sampler of intaglio technique, including silk aquatint, magnesium and copper etching, relief printing, gradated plate tone along with silk screen, printed on the signature TGL handmade cotton paper.
