Gladewater Museum

In the East Texas Oil Field, there were over 32,000 wells drilled, with about 3,000-4,000 still producing oil today. These wells have produced over 6 billion barrels of oil, with an estimated 1 billion still underground. In 1988, the field produced 45,000 barrels of oil and 1 million barrels of saltwater, which is injected back into the ground for conservation and disposal purposes.

To find oil, geologists would use a core bit to take a sample of rock from the bottom of the hole and analyze it for oil. They would also sometimes smell and taste the sample to determine how much further they needed to go to reach the oil.
