On your left is the Douglas Visitor Center. Over 100,000 people visit Parris Island each year. At the Douglas Visitor Center, orientation material is available for those wishing to learn about Parris Island. Open Wednesday through Friday during graduation week, the center provides a relaxed atmosphere for visitors, and allows graduating recruits to reacquaint themselves with families and friends. Drink and dining options are available at the Java Café inside the center. Tap or click here to view hours and menu options.
The visitor center is named for Paul H. Douglas. In 1942 Douglas, then age 50, enlisted in the Corps, becoming the oldest recruit to complete training before or since. He was selected as his platoon’s outstanding Marine at graduation.
As a captain, Douglas was sent to the Pacific Theater in a non-combat role (he was technically too old). While there, he talked his way into a combat role, later receiving two Purple Hearts. He also earned a Bronze Star with V for Valor on Peleliu in 1944. Discharged a Lieutenant Colonel in 1946, Douglas later became a U.S. Senator from Illinois.
