As part of the post-World War I expansion of Marine Aviation, the Corps approved construction of a flying field at Parris Island in 1919 on this current picnic area. A squadron of aviators, planes, and accompanying facilities known as Flight L, arrived at Parris Island on 12 June 1919. Over the next two years, the program expanded to six landplanes, six seaplanes, 24 officers and 210 enlisted men. Near the end of 1920, the Marine Corps designated Quantico as the main field on the east coast. Flight L was sent to Guam and the Parris Island Aviation Field was placed on inactive status in June 1921, and abandoned by September.
