As you pass this historically delicious building on the left, imagine the smell of baking bread and sugar creations wafting through the air. Building 295 was constructed in 1943 as part of the mobilization efforts around World War II. The influx of recruits and permanent personnel required an increase in food production on Parris Island.
Building 295 housed the bakery until the 1970s, when it was converted into storage and then the Food Service Office. It now serves as the IT/Computer Center. In 1962, Parris Island received the distinction of serving the best bread in the Marine Corps in a competition conducted by the American Institute of Baking. During that year, the bakery produced 6,000 pounds of bread and 5,000 pounds of pastry each day in support of the depot.
Continue on Mexico Street. You are entering the Historic Dry Dock District. At the intersection with Boulevard De France, look left and right at Buildings 10 and 11. Construction began here in 1897. Continue straight.
