On your left is the site of the former Naval Hospital aboard Parris Island. It began as a small dispensary in 1891 and eventually grew to over fifty buildings during the World War II period. It included 14 general wards as well as several specific wards, including rehabilitation, orthopedic, psychiatric, surgical, contagious cases, obstetrics, and gynecology. The hospital closed in 1949 when it was relocated off the island in the town of Port Royal.
As you drive down Mexico Street, entering the historic dry dock district, look for Building 295 on your left.
