On your left are two monuments. The Purple Heart monument, dedicated in 2008, honors the personal sacrifice of all, living and dead, who have earned the medal in service to our country. The Drill Instructor monument is dedicated to all who have trained recruits at Parris Island. John Chalk designed identical monuments for both Parris Island and San Diego recruit depots. On your right stands the Recruit Chapel. The Depot began construction on the building in May 1983. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held on 13 December 1983 with the first service on Christmas Eve. Its windows are adorned with stained glass paid for by Marine organizations, celebrating the achievements of the Marine Corps.
Continue down Boulevard de France. Just past the bleachers, the Iwo Jima monument is on your left.
