As you pass the dry dock on your left, do you hear music playing? The original hexagonal Victorian-style gazebo, or bandstand, was constructed in 1903. It was a frequent spot for Sunday band concerts and entertainment. Across the street from the Gazebo is Quarters One, the Commanding General’s home. Portions of this 27-room home date to 1883. Ensign William Braunerstruther was one of its first occupants; he oversaw the construction of the new naval station from 1883 to 1888. The completed base opened in 1889, and was home to its first commander, Lieutenant Charles H. Lyman. Originally located along the Beaufort River, Quarters One was moved to its current location in 1892 to accommodate the construction of the dry dock.
