Anise Aiello: Mother of Waters

Hello, my name is Anise Aiello. My current work is grounded in my experience in Public Health and explores the intersection of medical history, geography, and politics through craft.

The 2,340-mile-long Mississippi River, flowing from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, loops and curls through regions marked by over a century of struggle for medical freedom. Turning to the beauty of the landscape as a conduit for attention and wellness, Mother of Waters is a two-hundred-piece hand-dyed porcelain installation that transforms the topography of the Mississippi River into a 3D form within the gallery. Each component, made through a drawing process with clay, references the alluvial forms of the river delta and biomorphic shapes inspired by life sciences.

The resulting labor of my love is in honor of all those who have faced reproductive and gynecological-related health issues.
