Monica Aiello: The Rincon

Hello, my name is Monica Aiello. My work is inspired by planetary science, and I’ve spent over 25 years investigating our solar system through art. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work alongside NASA scientists for both my work and education efforts. From Jupiter’s moons to endangered landscapes on Earth, I’m captivated by natural vistas as viewed from the vantage point of space.

The painting in the Family Ties exhibition is commission for the Hotel Polaris at the U.S. Air Force Academy. The piece is inspired by a geological feature called The Rincon located in the Lake Powell region of Utah. It shows an abandoned river channel along the Colorado River, one of the most crucial waterways on Earth.

In 1871, artist Thomas Moran joined the Hayden Geologic Survey to capture the American West. His large-scale paintings were crucial in early conservation efforts and helped establish the National Park initiative. Through my work, I too strive to draw attention to the importance of natural places in hopes of inspiring awe, wonder and stewardship.
