Introduction to Rancho Seco Howard Ranch Trail

Welcome to the Rancho Seco–Howard Ranch Trail. This seven-mile round-trip hike begins at the Rancho Seco Recreational Area and loops around the north end of Rancho Seco Lake. As you walk, you’ll pass through grasslands, oak woodlands, wetlands, marshes, and seasonal vernal pools, with wide views toward the Sierra Nevada on clear days.

This landscape changes throughout the year. In winter and early spring, rain fills shallow pools that become busy with life, including fairy shrimp and the federally endangered California tiger salamander. As spring warms, wildflowers bloom across the ground, and by summer the hills turn golden.

This trail exists thanks to a partnership between SMUD, The Nature Conservancy, Cosumnes River Preserve and the California Conservation Corps. You are also walking through part of the historic Howard Ranch, once owned by Charles Howard, the owner of the famous racehorse Seabiscuit, and still used today as a working cattle ranch.

Please stay on the trail, leave dogs and bikes at home, carry water, protect yourself from the sun, and be mindful of ticks as you enjoy your walk.
