On the right is a window in memory of the remarkable Revd E L Berthon, vicar between 1860 and 1892, who carried out major restoration to the Abbey church. This window shows the Holy family in Nazareth, with Mary teaching Jesus to read, and Joseph at work with his plane. Note the homely items like the knitting wool and needle, the scissors and other tools behind the figures.
The subject of Joseph at work is appropriate, since Berthon himself was a woodworker and ran a boatyard in the town, as well as being a keen astronomer and inventor. This is an appropriate place to commemorate him, since it was he who removed from this chapel a large wooden gallery holding the Walker organ and many seats, which would have totally blocked this window. The window once again comes from the firm of James Powell and Sons.
