Bullman Street Stairway

The Bullman Street Stairway is located just south of 55 South Main Street, just opposite where the Lehigh empties into the Delaware River. It was originally built of cast iron in 1869, and rededicated on December 12, 2002, after a major restoration. These stairs have served as a major thoroughfare for inhabitants of Phillipsburg for over 90 years. A Phillipsburg resident, and local historian of the town, Ron Wyncoop was quoted, "In Phillipsburg, they are just steps of convenience. But people really had a love affair with -- or under -- the Bullman Street steps."

In 2002, funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Phillipsburg Urban Enterprise Zone, enabled the Town to reconstruct the steps for future generations.  Today, the stairs are used by residents to get from the hill in Phillipsburg to South Main Street and provide many residents with a place to exercise by walking the full 147 steps. Well, 294 steps total, for the return trip. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week. The good news? Both can be achieved by climbing 10 flights of stairs daily or one round-trip on the Bullman Stairs.
