The Phillipsburg National Bank located at 115 South Main Street, was a State bank from 1856 until 1865, when it was chartered as a national bank. In 1970 the Phillipsburg National Bank merged with the Second National Bank, the two largest of the three commercial banks in Phillipsburg at that time. In 2000, Phillipsburg National Bank and Trust Company, changed names again and consolidated operations under their parent company, Vista Bank, reflecting the name of their parent company, Vista Bancorp. Vista, one of the last remaining banking companies based in the Lehigh Valley region, was created as a holding company in 1988, so Phillipsburg National could expand across the Delaware River into Easton. Federal regulators required the creation of the holding company to operate in more than one state.
The Phillipsburg National Bank building is a notable landmark, constructed in 1928. Experts have written that it is obviously erected in the Greek and Roman revival styles, but every element, including the capitals, pilasters, and entablature, is the product of later modifications. the ornate door surround is partly Beaux-Arts.
The Bank was chartered in 1956 and, in 1858, was located in Union Square.
