55 South Main Street, better known as The Apothecarium, is one of the newer buildings on the tour, made famous, or at least well-known for selling marijuana to anyone over 21 years old, starting with the sale of medical marijuana in November of 2021. The Apothecarium is a Full-Service Recreational Marijuana and Medical Cannabis Dispensary with locations throughout the United States. The building's original use was banking, with the construction representing Neoclassical architecture fitting into the local structural landscape. This free-standing structure has been heavily modified on the interior. One modern-day tenant divided the building horizontally, creating a second floor, bifurcating the front windows. Seriously, what were they thinking? Thankfully, the current owners removed the misplaced floor but lost forever are the interior finishes of the bank built in the 1920s.
This Neoclassical Revival building has a stone lower course, brick up to the wide cornice, and a simple one with wide block dentils. The shallow overhang and small parapet with a crest are typical of the Neoclassical style. There are several recessed string (belt) courses; the blocky entablature with pediment surrounding the entrance and an incised name over the entrance are also common elements. The most distinctive feature, of course, is the round-arch windows with accented keystones. The stout iron grills on the basement windows remain, but the windows have been filled in with cinder blocks by this most recent owner for what the tour producer guesses are for security reasons. Other security features include bright lights, fences, and high-definition cameras to monitor the area around the clock.
