Skinner Building, located at 146 South Main Street has been used for several purposes over the years. One tenant was the Phillipsburg Post Office, which was moved from its location at Ortygia Hall on Hanover Street, where it operated from July 1, 1897, when the Post Office started offering free delivery; the Post Office moved to the Skinner building at 146 South Main Street, the structure then occupied by the Electric Laundry. The then Postmaster Pierson said, "it's to be ready for occupancy on September 1" (1910). To create the tour, we looked high and low for any information on how the buildings on the tour were used. In this case, we found an article uncovered by Ron Wynkoop Senior, published by the Easton Express dated April 22, 1910, that was in the possession of the current building owner.
For further context from the same article, Ortygia Hall was located on Hanover Street, just behind the old Phillipsburg Hotel overlooking the Central Rail Road on the south end of the Black Bridge. The building was severely damaged by fire and razed on March 22, 1969.
Today, Helen's Floral Shoppe stands where the Phillipsburg Post Office once stood, serving the Phillipsburg area since 1935. Helen's Floral Shoppe is a full-service florist offering a wide variety of arrangements, plants, and gift items.
