165 South Main St is one of the town's more distinctive buildings. It was originally the Seager family home, erected as a three-bay, three-story Greek Revival townhouse. That portion retains the original door surround and window treatment. In 1886 it may have served as a grocery, with a lawyer and tailor upstairs. It was a restaurant - the Painted Lady in 2005 and presently is vacant after a recent fire in the rear of the structure.
The substantially-modified structure is now playful and exotic - definitely not a part of the Western canon. Close examination reveals an elaborate surface texture. The turned struts/braces supporting the shed roofs are most unusual, and the Asian-influenced cupola, at the top of the building probably dates to the 1893 to 1903 period.
