Port Deposit

Welcome to Historic Port Deposit, Maryland!

Known as Cresap's Ferry and Creswell's Ferry until 1812, it was an important ferry crossing for travellers, and a critical exchange point for river commerce.

The flat-bottomed arks and timber rafts coming down the river loaded with flour, grain, lumber, coal, iron and other goods from places North on the river were transloaded  onto larger vessels here at the deepwater river town.  The larger vessels would then venture to places along the Chesapeake Bay and beyond.

In 1824, this tide-water town on the Susquehanna River was officially incorporated as the Town of Port Deposit.  The entire town was listed as a historic distric on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Experience this tour this at your own pace and come back whenever you'd like.

This tour is put together by the Port Deposit Heritage Corporation, located in the Paw Paw Building at 98 North Main Street.

The cover photo is courtesy of Henry Peden and Jack Shagena from their book, "Port Deposit - River Town in the Shadow of a Cliff", 2019.
