This apartment building was previously a hospital run by Dr. Richards. Many folks were born and died within those walls. Before the hospital, it was known as Mrs. Murphy's tavern and hotel in 1858 and prior to that, was a private home to the postmaster John A. J. Creswell, who was born here in 1828. The stone part of the building dates to 1813 (if not earlier), and is one of the original 13 buildings that were here before the town officially became a town.
Port Deposit is a quaint town of under 700 residents with a history of a bustling trading center from the early 1800s. Center Street serves as the divide between North and South Main Street. In the "town square", there is a drinking fountain erected in 1903 by Martha Beech, (a teacher and an artist) in memory of her mother, Miranda. It was built to provide drinking water for horses, travelers, dogs, cats and birds from the spring that came from the hill. Look at the base of the fountain and see the bowl for the small animals. Stand on the bank building steps to view the bird bath that was carved out of the top of the fountain.
If you walk toward Susquehanna River, you will cross the railroad tracks and head toward the Promenade.
