Adjacent to Town Hall at 66 South Main St, are granite steps constructed in the early 1900s. The steps were constructed to allow residents and students to climb from Main Street to High Street, and then reach Tome School for Boys (which is no longer in existence). This dramatic stairway of 75 steps begins with a series of wide granite bricks, followed by a curving series of stone steps leading to the landing. The steps continue to a high overlook offering a marvelous view of four bridges and the Susquehanna River. The steps are also now known as the "Steps to Liberty" as they later served as a thoroughfare from the Bainbridge Naval Training Center (many years later) to downtown Port Deposit. They are not to be confused with the steps also known as "Jacob's Ladder", which are further down on South Main Street.
To avoid an arduous climb, you can walk up High Street to enjoy the view and take photos and then use the steps to return to Main Street. If you turn away from the steps towards the river, you can see the archway mentioned elsewhere on this tour.
