The Tome mansion that once stood against the rocky cliffs across the street was built in 1850, as was this structure since it served the mansion. Gas from within those walls would be used to illuminate the lamps on the interior and exterior of the mansion, as well as part way up the street.
Once Washington Hall was erected as the first Jacob Tome School, the gas house was the field house for the Institute's athlete's with lockers and a shower.
It has been faithfully restored with alot of support by the Town Council and Administrator who wrote the grant to obtain funding.
